Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts hosted its annual ball on September 17 in celebration of the organization’s historic 40th anniversary. Held right on the Filene Center stage (the 2nd largest in the country) that most people only see from the seats and the lawn, this magical evening transported guests on a nostalgic journey back to Wolf Trap’s early years showcasing its continued legacy as a place where culture and community take center stage.
Greeted upon arrival by The Olivera Strings – an eight-piece strolling string ensemble – nearly 1,000 members of the business, cultural, social, and political community attended in support of the foundation’s renowned education and arts programs, raising more than one million dollars for its cause. This year’s stage design featured four distinct settings, representing the four pillars of Wolf Trap’s mission in The Filene Center; The Barns at Wolf Trap; the Wolf Trap Opera Company; and Wolf Trap Education.
The event was co-chaired by Wolf Trap Foundation Board Member Tim Keating of the Boeing Company and Wolf Trap Associates Board Member Peter Lauria of Baker Tilly. Sound Connection, an award-winning 10-piece band headlined the event with music for guests to dance the night away. We mingled with VIPs Darrell Green, National Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee and former National Wolf Trap Education spokesperson, Maestro Emil de Cou, Congressman Frank Wolf, and the ambassadors to Australia, Iraq, Sweden, Oman, and Iceland.
The crowd was in Wolf Trap bliss as they sipped signature cocktails named “Lawn Rush” and “Encore” alongside top-shelf fare provided by Design Cuisine. Among many high points was the expertly produced Wolf Trap 40th Anniversary video, which showcased “Happy Anniversary” messages and more extensive sit down interviews with the likes of Tony Bennett, Lyle Lovett, Willie Nelson, Marvin Hamlisch, Kathy Mattea, Huey Lewis and other artists that have graced Wolf Trap’s stage over the years.
You could sense the pride radiating from Terre Jones, Wolf Trap’s President & CEO as well as his dedicated staff who made this a night to remember for all lucky enough to be involved. At the end of the night, a lucky raffle winner claimed the experience of a lifetime – an evening out in New York City with none other than the incomparable Marvin Hamlisch.
